The Story

“The Wise Women” tells the true story of Winifred, Mary and Sarah Holman - a mother and her daughters in seventeenth-century Cambridge - and how she and one of the daughters were accused, jailed,  tried and acquitted of witchcraft and then went on to successfully sue their accusers for defamation.

Meticulously researched and gloriously presented by their direct descendant, composer Alison Holman (together with husband Christopher Iain Blair), the saga of ‘The Wise Women’ foreshadows the mania of the Salem Witch Trials and their impact on modern pop culture. The musical transports us back to a time when survival required trust, faith and the skills of all -  including three remarkable women who drew on the healing powers from the natural world, passed down through generations, and their strength from family.
